Part 4: The Jinns

What are Jinns?

We have discussed in depth about angels from both religious perspectives so I have decided to dedicate this post to the discussion on jinn's. What are jinn's? How do we as humans know of their existence?

The jinn's are supernatural spirits who inhabit the unseen world far beyond the visible universe of the humans. The jinn's are mentioned in the Quran as being a creation of God, together with angels and humans. As humans are created from clay, angels from light, jinn's are created from a scorching smokeless fire. They too have a free will, similar to that of humans. They have a choice to practice any religion they wish and will be held accountable on the day of judgement of their actions and will enter either paradise or hell depending on this. As jinn's are created from a fire they possess a fiery nature which is the reason for them being non-Muslim and make up the army of iblis.

Jinn's are usually invisible to humans, but humans can be visibly seen to the jinn's. They can travel large distances through extremely short times and are believed to be residing in isolated places such as caves, mountains, trees, seas, and in the air. They dwell in these places in small communities and sometimes can appear in front of a human but will almost always take on another physical appearance. This can sometimes be in the form of a person's relative whether deceased or alive, it could be in the appearance of animals and snakes are understood to be a metamorphosis of jinn's.

All human beings have appointed jinn's who follow them everywhere they go. They are known as al-Qareen. It Is believed that al-Qareen are responsible for whispering into the ears of men to commit sin. It could be said that the bad voice in your head is the voice of al-Qareen. Many people have killed someone through anger and in the spur of the moment but have regretted their actions later. Many couple have divorced one another and many individuals have committed suicide when they have felt quite low and hopeless.

The Prophet when asked revealed that he too was appointed a jinn but his had submitted to him and only encouraged him to do good.

People have sometimes witnessed or experienced strange phenomena which they can only describe as aliens, ghosts, or even ufo's. Although there is no clear evidence of the existence of ghosts, or aliens or even ufo's it is believed that these are all various names describing the same phenomena, of jinn's.

Jinn's cannot communicate to humans unless humans welcome this communication. In cases where interaction with jinn's has occurred, this usually has involved black magic. One case of interaction between humans and jinn's is the famous story of Solomon and the jinn's. Prophet Solomon utilized the jinn's to work at his service by constructing buildings. Of these buildings it is believed that the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem was expanded by the jinn's on the command of Prophet Solomon.

Al-Aqsa Mosque expanded by jinn's {left} and Masjid al-Jinn {Right} [in Makkah, Saudi Arabia] which was constructed by jinn's.

We know quite a bit about the characteristics and abilities of the jinn's but what happens when they begin to communicate with human beings? Are there any reported cases where humans have welcomed the communication of jinn's? Or have sought to control these fiery creations of God for their personal gain? What actually happens when jinn's and men begin to interact? And finally is it possible for the jinn's to possess a person as was shown in the film 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose?'

This topic has surely made me curious to find out more...

  1. As you mentioned above that the appointed jinns to humans 'al-Qareen' whisper things in human ear and the person end up doing something that he/she regrets later. Wouldn't this be a person's own 'nafs'. As in Islam it is believed that everyone is responsible for their own actions. If we start thinking that it was the jinn who made us do this or that, then what happens to the 'responsibility of own actions'. Jinn are believed to be a powerful creation, but surely there must be good and bad jinns, same as humans. As it is believed in Islam that God created Heaven and Hell for both humans and jinns.

    1. There are good and bad jinns but the good jinns are very low in number. It is the bad jinns who make up the army of iblis and report to him on a daily basis as to which one of them has caused the greatest damage. One jinns tells iblis how he whispered into the ear of man and tempted him to commit zina but then another jinn boasts about how he fuelled an arguement between a couple causing the man to divorce his wife. Iblis is happy with this jinn and allows him to wear his crown as he has caused two families to disunite. Having said that it is ultimately man's responsibility for his own actions and cannot blame any other than himself. The Prophet has already warned us for the way jinns will behave and how iblis will be an enemy to mankind and we should take heed of this warning and be ready when such temptations arise.
