Part 5: Possession

Can jinn's possess people?

I have researched extensively on the internet as well as talking to many people in my quest to search for answers regarding jinn possession. There are many websites which identify the problem of jinn possession but the reliability of these can be questioned as sometimes the material found on these webpages are usually from personal experience sometimes sufferers of depression but who are misdiagnosed as being possessed.

The following link; http://alternativeentertainment.wordpress.com/2010/03/04/depression-mental-illness-jinn-possession-an-islamic-view/ discusses this subject intensely in the form of four you-tube videos. I believe this material is very reliable as the panel who talks about possession consists of a doctor, a specialist, a psychiatrist and an Islamic scholar with a specialism within this subject. This states that the problem of possession must be on the increase if a panel such as this has set up this website to inform and educate laymen people about this topic. The purpose of this panel is to clarify what symptoms experienced by people describe mental health illness and what describe possession.

My research has led me to two viewpoints. Firstly it is stated by some scholars of Islam that Jinn's have absolutely no power to possess a human. These scholars completely deny claims made by some people that they have had some kind of relationship with the jinn or in some cases are married to them. I know it sounds bizarre but these are very real claims. These scholars claim this to be a result of schizophrenia and other psychological disorders.

However other scholars do agree that inter-marriages of jinn's and humans although rare are not unheard of, but claim they are not permitted. Before any kind of possession can take place people first summon a jinn to their aid. People often visit 'pir's or aamils' who are experienced in the knowledge of the dark arts or black magic. The visits could be for a number of reasons, to remove illnesses, to seek marriage proposals, better jobs, or to seek revenge on other people by asking the pir's to cast a spell on the person. These visits are very harmful to humans as jinn's can actually harm people. Humans cannot see jinn's so they are more vulnerable to be attacked and there are some very real experiences of jinn's harming individuals.

These aamils and pir's first summon the evil jinn's and spirits by carrying out acts to please Satan. An example of this is the 'ustad' or teacher in a village in Sindh, province of Pakistan; who for many months recited the Quran backwards to please the Satan. These ustads and there are many in places like Sindh gain power by praising the shaytaan [evil jinn's] and reciting formulas of heretical nature and either denying Allah completely or associating others with Allah. They also indulge in practices such as preparing charms with the blood of dead people. These practitioners constantly live in a state of filth and impurity. They provide amulets and charms from vulnerable people for a very large sum of money sometimes in the thousands.

The jinn's are called and summoned by these aamils, pir's, and ustads and are sent to the people they are intended for and possessions take place. The person who has been possessed experiences extreme fatique, loss of motivation, pain in the body and such extreme symptoms that cause madness. They become unaware and debilitated by their experience and need help from clerics or scholars who recite verses from the Quran to help them overcome this state and to expel the jinn from within them. When a person is possessed they may speak to others in their own voice and also in the voice of the jinn who has possessed them as evident in the following clip in...

  1. I am a firm believer in the jinn, having said that, I think that we have to look at it realistically. Certain people who suffer from mental disorders like schizophrenia, paranoia and depression can be mistaken for displaying symptoms of being possessed. There are so many fraudsters and charlatans out there who are ready to take advantage of people who are vulnerable and desperate to help their loved ones. They'll feed them all manner of lies, to trap them into 'curing' the 'possessed' and go weeks on end with the 'treatment', this is a ploy to extort as much money as they can. I've seen it happen all too often, I personally know of a young mother who after the birth of her baby suffered post-natal depression, her family ended up paying just over £3,000 to help with exorcising so called demons that possessed her. Grrr! it makes me really angry that these people are getting away with it, and they call themselves Muslims.

    1. You're right alot of this occurs in places like Pakistan, although it has started to appear in this country also. I mean when will these people begin to see through the fraudsters and charlatans but when one is desperate all common sense goes out of the window. It is a quick and easy money making scheme. I think these 'Pirs' should maybe have a license to operate their services and they should be scrutinized. What do u think?

  2. Personally I wouldn't know who to turn to in such a situation, like Farah said this could be the result of a number of mental disorders. If one did turn to a 'pir' - he may say it is jinn possesion when that may not be the case just to make some money by taking advantage of one's vulnerability (I suppose one has to be very careful about which pir he/she turns to for help. I would advise anyone in such a predicament to seek medical advise.

    1. People are quick to think and ready to believe they are possessed although such cases are proven very rare. rather then go to doctors for a diagnosis they go to Pirs without even looking at their credibility. They are convinced into believing they will soon recover even when they have spent so much money. When will the penny drop for them to realise they are being conned?
